Laptops are becoming more prevelant in businesses as people find new and interesting places to get their work done. We have also seen a proliferation of USB FLASH drives or thumb drives as some people call them. These are small and very convinient devices. I use one myself as do all our team.

Now it is more important than ever to protect your data on both laptops and USB Flash drives. Laptops are a desirable device for criminals because they have high value and USB Flash drives can be easily lost simply because of their size - the one thing that makes them so convenient.

So how can you protect your data from theft or loss?

Controlling access to data is perhaps the most significant control any business can put into place to reduce the potential for data loss. To do this businesses need to: Require users to have and use passwords to access computers and networks Give remote access to data only to essential staff Locate servers in a secure room or in a well supervised location Limit the use of USB Flash drives or keys to essential staff only Require password encrypted USB Flash drives Encrypt laptop hard drives to prevent data theft Enable auditing on servers to track files and users Monitor email usage – especially emails with attachments Monitor or restrict usage of the internet To discuss your specific needs or ways to implement any of these solutions please contact us.
